Goju-Ryu Karate

Goju-Ryu fist emblem

Goju-Ryu — "the hard-soft style" — is one of the great styles of Okinawa, and part of the curriculum at LA Karate.

History

Goju-Ryu was founded by Chojun Miyagi (1888–1953) of Okinawa, successor of Kanryo Higaonna's Naha-te. The name comes from the ancient Bubishi text: "Ho wa goju wo tondosu" — "the way of the universe is both hard and soft." Hard, direct strikes and soft, circular, breathing-driven movements live side by side in this style.

Characteristics

  • Hard and soft combined — powerful strikes blended with fluid, circular blocks and evasions
  • Breathing as technique — ibuki (dynamic breathing) builds internal power and focus
  • Core kata Sanchin and Tensho — the foundation of body conditioning, posture, and breath control
  • Close-range fighting — grappling, joint techniques, and short powerful strikes
  • Body conditioning — hojo undo training builds a strong, resilient body

Why Train Goju-Ryu

Goju-Ryu develops a different kind of power than Shotokan: rooted, breathing-driven, and devastating at close range. Training both styles gives our students a complete martial education.
