Dojo Etiquette

Dojo Etiquette

The dojo is a place of respect and focused training. These simple rules keep training safe and meaningful for everyone.

The Dojo Kun

At the end of each class we recite the Dojo Kun — the five guiding principles of karate:

  1. Seek perfection of character
  2. Be faithful
  3. Endeavor to excel
  4. Respect others
  5. Refrain from violent behavior

Basic Rules

  • Bow when entering and leaving the dojo
  • Keep your uniform (gi) clean and your nails trimmed
  • Remove jewelry and watches before training
  • Listen quietly when the instructor speaks; never talk during exercises
  • Respect every training partner — control your techniques
  • Help keep the dojo clean

New students learn all of this naturally in their first classes — no need to memorize anything in advance.
