Kihon – Karate Basics
What Is Kihon?
Kihon means "basics" or "fundamentals." It is the foundation of all karate: the stances (dachi), punches (tsuki), kicks (geri), and blocks (uke) practiced step by step, usually in lines, moving forward and backward across the dojo floor.
Why Basics Matter
Every advanced technique in karate is built from kihon. Repetition of the basics develops correct form, real power (kime), balance, and muscle memory. There are no shortcuts: black belts are simply students who never stopped practicing their basics.
Kihon at LA Karate
Every class at our dojo begins with kihon. Beginners learn the core stances and strikes from day one, and advanced students keep refining them for life. New students are always welcome — no experience needed.
Kihon for Advanced Adults
For our advanced adult students we use a specially developed training method that differs from traditional approaches. It is designed specifically for experienced practitioners — no exhausting hours of standing in basic stances. Instead, you get focused, dynamic kihon training built for the advanced level.
