Asai-Ryu Karate
Asai-Ryu is the dynamic Shotokan-based style of Master Tetsuhiko Asai — and the third pillar of training at LA Karate.
Asai-Ryu is rooted in Shotokan karate and enriched with principles of Chinese White Crane kung fu (Bai He Quan), which Tetsuhiko Asai wove into his karate.
Asai-Ryu Kata
The Asai-Ryu kata syllabus includes the Kibaken series — Kibaken Shodan, created by Tetsuhiko Asai, as well as Kibaken Nidan through Godan and Super Kibaken of Kato-ryu, preserved and taught by Kato Shihan.
The wider Asai-Ryu syllabus also includes: Joko 1–5, Kakuyoku 1–3, Dai Ken kata 1–4, the Kiho Ken series, Seiryu, Sensho, Senka, Rakuyo, Meikyo Nidan, Shotei, Rantai (Ranzetsu), Kyakusen, Suishu, Hachimon, and others.
Master Tetsuhiko Asai (1935–2006)
Asai trained at Takushoku University under Gichin Funakoshi and Masatoshi Nakayama, graduated from the JKA instructor program, and became JKA champion in kumite (1961) and kata (1963), later serving as the JKA's Technical Director. In 2000 he founded the International Japan Martial Arts Karate Asai-ryu (IJKA) and the Japan Karate Shoto-Renmei (JKS). He was awarded 10th dan.
Characteristics
- Built on Shotokan — all Shotokan basics and kata, taken further
- Fluid, dynamic body movement — famous for soft, relaxed power generated through the whole body
- Advanced hip and body dynamics — techniques driven by rotation, snap, and natural movement
- Rich kata heritage — dozens of original kata created by Asai himself (see our Asai Kata page)
Why It Matters
Asai-Ryu teaches karate as a living art: the same punch becomes faster, softer, and more powerful through superior body mechanics. It is the perfect complement to Shotokan and Goju-Ryu in our dojo.
