Kumite – Sparring

What Is Kumite?

Kumite means "meeting of hands" — partner practice. It begins with prearranged drills (gohon kumite, ippon kumite), where attacker and defender know the techniques in advance, and progresses to free sparring (jiyu kumite).

Safe and Controlled

Safety comes first at LA Karate. Students learn control before contact, use protective gear, and spar under instructor supervision. Beginners start with simple partner drills and advance at their own pace — nobody is thrown into sparring before they are ready.

What Kumite Develops

  • Timing, distance, and reflexes
  • Calm decision-making under pressure
  • Respect for your partner and yourself
  • Confidence that carries into everyday life

Free Fighting for Advanced Students

For advanced students we also practice jΕ« kumite — free fighting. Throws are allowed, groundwork is included, and there are no stoppages for awarding points — the bout runs to the end. Naturally, everything stays under full instructor control, without injuries.
