Tetsuhiko Asai: The Master Behind Asai-Ryu Karate

Tetsuhiko Asai (1935–2006) was one of the most brilliant technicians karate has ever produced — and the master whose vision gave rise to Asai-Ryu karate.

Born in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, Asai practiced sumo, judo, kendo, and sojutsu as a boy before discovering karate at Takushoku University. There he learned from Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan himself, and later trained under Masatoshi Nakayama and Teruyuki Okazaki.

Asai graduated from the Japan Karate Association's famed instructor training program and became one of the JKA's most celebrated competitors, winning All-Japan championship titles in 1961 and 1963. He went on to teach in Taiwan and Hawaii, and served as the JKA's Technical Director.

What set Asai apart was his movement — fluid, whip-like, endlessly inventive. He wove the principles of Chinese White Crane kung fu (Bai He Quan) into his Shotokan foundation, creating the dynamic, flowing style we know today as Asai-Ryu.
